Petit arbre de moins de 9 m de haut, qui apprécie l'ombre d'arbres plus grands et taillé entre 2 et 3 mètres dans les plantations - Feuilles persistantes, d'un vert brillant, de forme elliptiques - Fleurs blanches, suaves, groupées en glomérules de 3 à 7 à l'aisselle des feuilles – Fruits (drupes appelées « cerises »), de couleur rouge vif ou violette à maturité, à la pulpe sucrée, contenant deux graines, placées face à face, à la forme caractéristique des grains de café.

Composants actifs
Xanthine alcaloïdes (caféine, théophylline, théobromine): ont un effet stimulant sur le système nerveux central et le système cardiovasculaire, réduisent la somnolence et augmentent la vigilance.
Phénols (acide chlorogénique): ce composé est connu comme un antioxydant, mais ralentit également l'absorption et la libération de glucose dans le sang après un repas.
Usage
Le café est la boisson populaire préparée à partir des grains torréfiés de cette plante. Le café est surtout apprécié pour son goût, arôme et son effet stimulant. C'est sans doute l'une des boissons les plus populaires.
