Meadowsweet

A large (0.5 to 1 m), perennial, herbaceous, leafy, velvety, upright plant, with rampant rhizomes - A reddish, hairless and angular stem - Flowers in multiple branched false umbels, highly fragrant, yellowish white in colour - Odd pinnate, dark green leaves, hairless on the top, white and fuzzy underneath - Characteristic helically wound fruits.

Active components

Essential oil (salicylaldehyde): responsible for the anti-inflammatory effect. Flavonoids: antioxidants that also have a diuretic effect. Tannins: astringent properties.

Usage

Thanks to its aromatic fragrance, the herb was once often used as a fragrant plant. The herb was spread over the floors of rooms to freshen the air and mask bad odours. It was also used to prepare beer, hydromel and jam, to lend it a subtle almond flavour. In the past, the young shoots were eaten like asparagus and the rhizome was prepared like salsify. Meadowsweet is a plant that has certainly merited its place in phytotherapy. It can be used for its diuretic properties and draining action, because it stimulates the kidneys to produce urine. ₁ Thanks to its anti-inflammatory action it relieves muscle and joint pain. _2,3
