Prune

Prune

Prunes are the fruit of the prune tree, a large bush or small shrub in the rosaceae family. The subspecies cross breed easily, with the consequence of the existence of several intermediary forms. Prune trees grow easily, they have very few requirements in terms of the land and location. The trees flower in April and May, and the oval, elliptical leaves appear during the same period. Later in the year, the fleshy, stone fruits mature to a blue, purple, yellow or red colour. The mature fruit is soft and juicy. It is generally flavoursome and soft.

Latin name

Prunus domestica L.

Origin

There are many hypotheses, but it is not known specifically where prunes come from. They were probably the result of an accidental cross between two wild species, undoubtedly originating in the Caucasus.

Used part

The fruit.

Active components

Fibre (pectin, sorbitol): this indigestible substance has a significant effect on intestinal transit. It also contributes to healthy intestinal flora. Polyphenols: these compounds have an antioxidant effect and protect the organs against free radicals.

Usage

The wood of the prune tree is hard and dense, it can be used for furniture and turning. Mature prunes can be eaten fresh or dried, and they are also used for jam and juice. Prunes can be eaten raw, they are perfect in fruit salad, cakes and savoury dishes. Certain species are used for the distillation of spirits such as Slivovitz. What our grandparents knew is supported by science: prunes are healthy and stimulate intestinal transit. 1-5
