Acacia werd al gebruikt tijdens de eerste Egyptische dynastie (3400 v.C.) voor het vervaardigen van inkt, door koolstof, gom en water te mengen. Dankzij de combinatie van wateroplosbare en vetoplosbare bestanddelen heeft de Arabische gom emulgerende eigenschapen. Hij wordt op grote schaal in de industrie gebruikt als stabilisator, bindmiddel en emulgator. Hij vindt toepassingen in textiel, keramiek, lithografie en de cosmetische en farmaceutische industrie. De meest gekende toepassing is ongetwijfeld postzegellijm. In de voedingsmiddelenindustrie wordt Arabische gom voornamelijk gebruikt in snoepgoed, bakkerijproducten, zuivelproducten en gashoudende dranken. Arabische gom heeft een bifidogeen en probiotisch effect. Hij draagt met andere woorden bij tot een gezonde darmflora.1-8
