Citroenmelisse
Aromatische, vaste, kruidachtige plant van 30 tot 80 cm hoog met vierkante, rechtopstaande stengels - De felgroene, kleine, gezaagd-gekartelde ovale blaadjes geven een zoete citroengeur af als ze worden gekneusd - De witte bloemen vormen een klokvormige kelk.

Actieve bestanddelen
Fenolzuren (rozemarijnzuur): deze stoffen met oxidatieremmende werking zijn verantwoordelijk voor het angstwerende en kalmerende effect. Etherische olie: verantwoordelijk voor het aroma en draagt bij tot de oxidatieremmende werking. Flavonoïden (apigenine): antioxidant.
Gebruik
Van de verse of gedroogde bladeren kan kruidenthee worden gemaakt, al dan niet aangelengd met thee. Citroenmelisse is een smaakmaker bij vele recepten zoals visgerechten, soepen, sauzen en omeletten. De plant is een natuurlijk bewaarmiddel.
De etherische olie wordt soms gebruikt om muggen en andere insecten op afstand te houden. Dankzij haar oxidatieremmende werking beschermt citroenmelisse de weefsels tegen oxidatieve stress.1-6 Het bijzondere aan deze plant is zijn kalmerende werking bij stress. Hij bevordert de cognitieve functies, ondersteunt het welzijn en draagt bij tot een verkwikkende nachtrust.7-14 Hij wordt ook gebruikt om de spijsvertering te ondersteunen en darmkrampen te verlichten.15-16
