Eucalyptus
De hoogte van deze boom kan variëren tussen 30 en 60 meter. Eucalyptus groeit bijzonder snel, tijdens de eerste drie jaar zelfs ongeveer een meter per maand. De groenblijvende eucalyptus wordt ook wel blauwe gomboom genoemd wegens de blauwachtige kleur van de bladeren. De vezelachtige schors bladdert af in lange stroken. De crèmekleurige bloemen zitten vol nectar, die door bijen gebruikt wordt om honing te produceren met een zeer uitgesproken smaak. De bloemknoppen hebben de vorm van een tol.

Gebruik
Voor de westerse mens de geneeskrachtige effecten ontdekte, werd de boom al eeuwenlang gebruikt door de Australische Aboriginals.
Door de verfrissende, kruidige en aangename geur wordt essentiële olie van eucalyptus zowel gebruikt voor aroma's als voor parfums en cosmetica. Tal van mondspoelproducten bevatten eucalyptol. Daarnaast zijn er ook toepassingen als insectendodend en insectenverdrijvend middel.
Traditioneel worden de bladeren en de olie gebruikt voor aandoeningen van de luchtwegen, zoals bronchitis. De gedroogde bladeren worden ook gerookt om astma te bestrijden. Eucalyptusolie wordt daarnaast gebruikt als koortswerend middel, dankzij zijn afkoelende effect op het lichaam. In de loop van de geschiedenis is de plant in de westerse en oosterse geneeskunde ook gebruikt tegen huidproblemen, gewrichtspijn en bacteriële infecties.
Uit wetenschappelijk onderzoek blijkt dat eucalyptus een verzachtend effect heeft bij irritatie van de keel, de keelholte en de stembanden. 1-16
