Ginseng
De plant groeit als onderhout (vereist natuurlijke of kunstmatige schaduw) - Houdt van zure (pH van 6,3 tot 6,8) en lichte gronden (zand- of leembodems), die de groei van de wortel bevorderen. Verliest zijn bladeren en stengel, en gaat in het najaar in de rust. In het warmere voorjaar begint hij vanuit zijn eindknop weer te groeien. Pas na een teeltduur van vier tot zeven jaar heeft hij een optimaal gehalte aan verbindingen om medicinaal te kunnen worden gebruikt.

Saponinen (ginsenosiden): moduleren de hypothalamus-hypofyse-bijnieras en zorgen dus voor het adaptogene effect. Polysachariden: zijn verantwoordelijk voor de immunostimulerende eigenschappen.
Gebruik
Wie ginseng koopt, moet goed opletten. Er bestaan namelijk veel verschillende soorten die niet allemaal dezelfde werking hebben en er zijn zelfs planten die de naam 'ginseng' onrechtmatig dragen.
De populaire traditionele geneeskunde kent allerlei werkingen aan de wortel toe, gaande van stimulerend tot lustopwekkend.
Van de naam 'Panax', die wondermiddel of middel tegen alle kwaaltjes betekent, kunnen we afleiden dat de ginseng een plant is die een groot aantal toepassingen heeft gekend.
Studies tonen aan dat ginseng rijk is aan antioxidanten en dus een beschermend effect op de cellen heeft.1-3
De plant draagt bij tot het behoud van een goed gemoed, vitaliteit en energie. Hij kan dus gebruiktworden tegen vermoeidheid en stress en voor een goed herstel.4-11
Ginseng ondersteunt de cognitieve reactiviteit en verbetert het geheugen en de concentratie.12-20
Daarnaast stimuleert hij de functies van het immuunsysteem.21-24
