Indiase kruisbes
De Indiase kruisbes, ook wel amla genoemd, is de eetbare vrucht van een struikachtige bladverliezende boom van de familie van de Euphorbiaceae die zo'n 15 meter hoog kan worden.
De lichtgroene bladeren zijn eenvoudig, en zitten dicht bij elkaar langs de twijgen. De groengele bloemen ontwikkelen zich in de herfst tot ronde, groene tot oranje-gele bessen die ook wel amalaki worden genoemd

Vezels: hebben de mogelijkheid om het overtollige maagzuur te absorberen.
Tannines: deze stoffen met antioxidant en adstringerende eigenschappen, beschermen het maagslijmvlies en helpen in geval van maagzweren.
Flavonoïden: antioxidanten, remmen ontstekingsreacties.
Vitamine C: antioxidant, neutraliseert vrije radicalen.
Gebruik
De bessen hebben een bitterzure smaak en bevatten veel vezels. Ze kunnen rauw of gedroogd worden gegeten maar meestal worden ze verwerkt in gerechten, onder andere als natuurlijk bewaarmiddel. Ze worden ook op gelegd in suikerwater of in zoutwater met kruiden.
Dankzij het hoge tanninegehalte werd deze bes gebruikt als natuurlijk beitsmiddel voor het fixeren van verfstoffen.
Extracten van de bessen, bladeren en takjes werden in Thailand gebruikt voor het bestrijden van koorts, hepatitis, ontstekingen en om wonden en huidziekten te behandelen. Amla wordt ook gebruikt om de spijsvertering te stimuleren en kan zowel bij diarree als bij constipatie worden ingezet 1-3. De bes is nog steeds één van de meest gebruikte planten in de Traditionele Chinese en Ayurvedische geneeskunde.
Ze wordt momenteel ook verwerkt in allerlei cosmetische producten vanwege haar beschermende eigenschappen tegen oxidatieve stress. Dit maakt haar een uitstekende component om voortijdige huidveroudering af te remmen 4-7. De olie die uit de bessen wordt geperst, wordt momenteel ook verwerkt in allerlei cosmetische producten zoals shampoos en haarconditioners.
Recent onderzoek laat zien dat deze plant een veelbelovende werking heeft naar de cerebrale functies. Ze zou zelfs een antidepressieve werking hebben 8-11. Amla werkt ook immunostimulerend omdat het de cytotoxische werking van de "Natural Killer" cellen versterkt 12-14.
Het heeft niet alleen een beschermende werking ten opzichte van het maagslijmvlies 15-20, maar ondersteunt de gezondheid van alle organen van het spijsverteringsstelsel 21-31.
