Ginkgo
Arbre à feuilles caduques, uniques parmi les spermatophytes, puisque formées de deux lobes en forme de palmes et ne présentant pas de nervure centrale comme la quasi-totalité des plantes modernes. Dotées d'un pétiole, elles sont insérées sur les rameaux par petits groupes de 3 ou 4 et atteignent de 5 à 15 cm de long - De taille moyenne à grande, l’arbre peut atteindre 20 à 35 m et une durée de vie de 1 250 ans. C’est un être vivant potentiellement immortel : il n'a pas de prédateurs naturels, ni de parasites ou maladies. Les seuls facteurs externes défavorables seraient l'homme, les aléas telluriques ou climatiques.

Naturalisé dans le sud-est de la Chine (espèce cultivée, la version sauvage ayant presque complètement disparu). De là, il arrive au Japon et en Corée aux alentours du XIIe siècle. C'est la plus ancienne famille d'arbres connue, puisqu'elle serait apparue il y a plus de 270 millions d'années!

Composants actifs
Terpène lactones (ginkgolides, bilobalides): sont responsables de l'action neuro-protectrice et de l'amélioration des facultés cérébrales.
Flavonoïdes: contribuent à l'action antioxydante.
Usage
Le ginkgo est un arbre qui, pour des motifs religieux, a été planté à proximité des temples japonais. Actuellement, il est souvent planté dans les parcs et les rues parce qu'il est très résistant à la pollution de l'air, résiste bien aux maladies et a une croissance lente, et notamment parce qu'en automne il donne des couleurs jaune-doré exceptionnellement belles.
Dans l'Est, les graines grillées sont mangées lors d'occasions spéciales comme les mariages et en raison de leurs propriétés aphrodisiaques supposées.
Le ginkgo biloba est utilisé depuis des milliers d'années dans la médecine populaire traditionnelle. Aujourd'hui, il est l'une des plantes les plus importantes de la phytothérapie. Il augmente les performances, la mémoire et la réactivité, entre autre grâce à l'amélioration de la circulation sanguine du cerveau. 1-7 Il contribue au bien-être général surtout en cas de stress. 8-11 Cela est particulièrement vrai pour les personnes à partir de 45 ans. 12-20 Entre autres grâce à son effet antioxydant puissant, le Ginkgo a un effet protecteur du système nerveux. 21-26
