Hibiscus
L’hibiscus est un arbuste massif pouvant atteindre 5 mètres de haut. Ses feuilles alternes, simples, ovales ou lancéolées ont des bords dentés ou ondulés. Ses fleurs isolées ou groupées en inflorescences, monochromes ou bicolores, torsadées avant l'ouverture complète, fleurissent de mars à octobre. Ses fruits en capsules s'ouvrent à maturité pour libérer des graines souvent velues.

Composants actifs
Acides organiques (acide citrique, malique et tartrique): ont un goût acide et sont des conservateurs naturels.
Anthocyanidines: responsables de la couleur rouge foncé, de l'effet anti-inflammatoire et aussi antioxydant puissant. Ils ont une action antihypertenseur, en agissant comme inhibiteurs de l'enzyme de conversion de l'angiotensine (ECA), et hypocholestérolémiant.
Vitamine C et caroténoïdes: antioxydants.
Usage
Les feuilles vertes sont utilisées en cuisine asiatique comme une version épicée d'épinards ou dans la soupe.
Les calices frais sont consommés crus en salade, mais peuvent aussi être cuits et utilisés comme arôme dans des gâteaux ou de la confiture. Les calices séchés sont utilisés comme ingrédients de sirops, de boissons gazeuses et même d’un type de bière. L’hibiscus peut être bu chaud ou froid en tisane. Sa saveur s’approche de celle de la canneberge. Son goût délicieux et son effet désaltérant sont appréciés partout dans le monde. Elle est riche en vitamines et minéraux.
En raison de la présence de colorants végétaux, cette plante est utilisée pour la coloration naturelle de la nourriture. On peut utiliser la fibre pour la fabrication de jute et de papier.
L’hibiscus a été utilisé en médecine populaire en tant que diurétique, laxatif doux et dans le traitement des maladies cardiaques et nerveuses. On considère que cette plante possède des propriétés antihypertenseur. C’est aussi un remède populaire contre les abcès, les troubles biliaires, la toux, le scorbut et les troubles urinaires. En plus elle possède des propriétés stimulantes et toniques qui contribuent à la résistance contre la fatigue mentale et physique.
Actuellement la science soutient son action sur l'élimination rénale1-4, sa contribution à une bonne circulation sanguine dans les micro-vaisseaux et sa diminution des sensations de jambes lourdes.5-20
