Harpagophytum ou Griffe du diable
C’est une plante herbacée vivace. Sa racine principale plonge verticalement très profondément dans le sol et possède des racines secondaires en tubercules bulbeux pouvant peser jusqu’à 1.5 kg. Ses feuilles sont charnues, pétiolées, opposées et lobées de couleur vert clair. Ses fleurs solitaires, en forme de trompette (4 à 6 cm), de couleur rose pâle évoluent légèrement vers le rouge violet à maturité. Les fruits ligneux très caractéristiques, de 10 à 20 cm de long, reposent directement sur le sol et sont garnis sur les côtés d'aiguillons crochus et acérés, leur donnant une forme de griffe très caractéristique.

Iridoïdes (harpagide, harpagoside, coumaroylharpagide, procumbide): substances responsables de l'effet anti-inflammatoire et analgésique, et de la protection du cartilage.
Acides phénoliques: antioxydant.
Flavonoïdes: antioxydant.
Usage
De nombreux groupes ethniques en Afrique ont traditionnellement utilisé les rhizomes de la griffe du diable pour différentes indications. Pour traiter l'estomac, les douleurs post-natales, la fièvre, le manque d'appétit, l'indigestion, pour guérir les maladies infectieuses, traiter l'infertilité féminine et les douleurs au niveau des membres. La griffe du diable est devenue le sujet de multiples études scientifiques dans les années 1950 lorsque des scientifiques allemands ont commencé à s'intéresser aux médicaments traditionnels namibiens. Depuis lors, des préparations à base du tubercule sont utilisées pour traiter les arthroses douloureuses, les tendinites, la goutte, le lumbago, la myalgie, la dyspepsie, la perte d'appétit et comme thérapie de soutien pour les rhumatismes dégénératifs. Jusqu'aux années 1990, on en savait peu au niveau des substances actives précises, de leurs effets exacts et de leur efficacité. Désormais des études ultérieures ont démontré que certains extraits d’harpago sont efficaces et sûrs à l'usage. L'utilisation de la griffe du diable est actuellement soutenue scientifiquement grâce à son action adoucissante 1-21 en cas de gênes articulaires 22-33 et de douleurs dans le bas du dos 34-40. L'extrait de cette plante peut également être appliqué dans des crèmes ou gels à usage externe. 41-43
