Omega 3-vetzuren (eicosapentaeenzuur (EPA) en docosahexaeenzuur (DHA)): omega 3-vetzuren zijn essentieel voor een normale stofwisseling. Ze lijken een ontstekingsremmend effect te hebben en een positieve impact op het cardiovasculaire systeem en het zenuwstelsel.
Vitamine A: een essentiële antioxidant voor het immuunsysteem, de botgroei, het gezicht en de celgroei.
Vitamine D: een stof lijkend op cholesterol die een belangrijke rol speelt, onder meer voor het behoud van de stevigheid van de botten en de spierfunctie.
Gebruik
Historisch gezien werd levertraan gebruikt voor de behandeling van rachitis bij kinderen en reumatische pijnen bij volwassenen.
Door het hoge gehalte aan omega 3-vetzuren, vitamine A en vitamine D gebruikte men deze olie vervolgens voor problemen met de calciumstofwisseling, het ademhalingssysteem, de bloedcirculatie en het zenuwstelsel.
Vitamine D kan worden aangemaakt in het menselijk lichaam onder invloed van de ultraviolette straling van de zon. Daarom lijkt het voor bepaalde gemeenschappen aangewezen om regelmatig wat bijkomende vitamine D in te nemen.
De geelachtige levertraan die in het begin van de twintigste eeuw vaak aan kinderen werd gegeven, had een ranzige smaak en rook naar rotte vis, waardoor de meeste personen tegenwoordig afkerig staan tegenover dit product.
Door doeltreffende extractie- en bewaartechnieken is de kwaliteit vandaag echter sterk verbeterd. Hierdoor zijn de geur en de smaak vandaag ook eerder neutraal.
