Propolis
Propolis is een door bijen gemaakte substantie, op basis van hun afscheidingen en een reeks harsachtige, gomachtige en balsemachtige stoffen van plantaardige oorsprong.

Propolis wordt door bijen verzameld op bepaalde delen van planten (vooral knoppen). De belangrijkste boomsoorten die propolis produceren zijn naaldbomen (schors van dennen, grenenbomen, sparren) en de knoppen van meerdere soorten elzen, wilgen, berken, pruimenbomen, essen, eiken, iepen, populieren (die de belangrijkste bron lijken te zijn) en paardenkastanjes.
Gebruikte delen
Na de oogst wordt propolis doorgaans gebruikt als tinctuur.
Actieve bestanddelen
Er bestaan verschillende soorten propolis. De samenstelling van propolis is erg variabel en complex. Meer dan 300 verschillende bestanddelen werden geïdentificeerd. Propolis bevat vooral harsen en balsems (50 tot 55%), was (30 tot 40%), vluchtige of etherische oliën (5 tot 10%), pollen (5%) en diverse materialen (5%). Daarnaast bevat propolis veel andere elementen zoals organische zuren, talrijke flavonoïden, oligo-elementen en veel vitaminen.
Gebruik
De oude Egyptenaren, Grieken en Romeinen waren goed op de hoogte van de therapeutische eigenschappen van deze stof en maakten er uitgebreid gebruik van als medicijn en ontsmettingsmiddel. 1
De samenstelling van propolis echter verschilt per gebied, seizoen en bijennest. Verrassend is dat, niettegenstaande de chemische samenstelling kan verschillen met betrekking tot de geologische locatie en de periode van oogsten, de antimicrobiële eigenschappen sterk vergelijkbaar zijn. 2
Propolis heeft een antimicrobiële werking, in het bijzonder tegen die bacteriën die een belangrijke rol spelen bij luchtweginfecties en zelfs tegen antibioticaresistente stammen. 3,4,5.Pinocembrine, galangine en het caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) behoren tot de componenten met de belangrijkste antimicrobiële activiteit. 6,7,8 De belangrijkste werkingsmechanismen zijn gebaseerd op de remming van bacterieel RNA-polymerase, de eiwitsynthese, de motiliteit, en de verstoring van het cytoplasma, het cytoplasmatisch membraan en de celwand.
Propolis werkt ook antioxiderend en ontstekingsremmend, waarbij het voornamelijk de flavonoïden zijn, die overvloedig in propolis voorkomen, die de NO-productie en de intracellulaire signaalcascades als NF-κB en MAPK remmen. 9,10,11 Verder leidt het tot een verbeterde vorming van collageenvezels wat op zijn beurt leidt tot een snellere wondheling. 11,12,13,14,15,16
Maar propolis doet meer, het heeft namelijk ook een immunostimulerende werking. Dit werd aangetoond aan de hand van in vitro en animaal onderzoek 17,18,19,20 maar ook bij mens werd deze werking waargenomen. 21
Propolis, de ideale handlanger in de strijd tegen winterkwaaltjes.
