Horse chestnut

A large medicinal and ornamental tree that can live longer than 300 years and measure up to 30 metres in height - Large deciduous, opposite, palmate leaves with 5 or 7 serrated folioles and a long petiole - White or pink flowers, stained with red, arranged in pyramid-shaped clusters - Fruit protected by a tough capsule, covered in spikes, containing one (sometimes 2) large toxic, brown, smooth and glossy seeds, that have one porous side that is greyish in colour, known as a horse-chestnut.

Aesculus hippocastanum L.

Origin

The Balkans and Western Asia - Planted throughout the northern Hemisphere.
